This is a post humus appraisal of the late Gabatshabe Hilton Baipidi. Born in 1920 Hilton started school at the age of 17 years in 1937. He started at sub A through to standard 4. So intelligent was him that he did both Subs A and B in the same year. Probably age was an advantage. In 1942 he left to South Africa to seek employment and was blessed with the job in Pretoria where he worked as a cashier at the Bantu Hotel.Unlike many who went to seek job to buy cattle and/or property for themselves, he accumulated money and bought slates and exercise books that he brought home in 1948 to start the first ever school in Mogapi. He actually financed the start up of the school from the shelter(classroom) gto the provission of Books and pens(slates at the time). He was the teacher, messenger and principal of the school. An umbelievable phenomenon with that school is that after six(6) months all the students were able to write letters to their parents. The school was so popular that it won the jalours from education officers in Serowe who immediately ordered for its closure in 1952. Mogapi was again without school which was later opened in 1958. When the school got closed Gabatshabe left for pretoria.Destined to improve the welfare of Bagapi, Gabatshabe was never demoralised by closeure of his school, among other things he started was to order the Botswana daily news[govt newspaper] for the people of Mogapi, buy and sell envelopes and stamps to Bagapi at no profit. Gabatshabe subscribed for a private bag with Palapye post office [Private Bag 37 Palapye] which Bagapi used without any payment.In 1964 Gabatshabe went to ask for water reticulation for Bagapi and that was done. He volunteered to represent Bagapi in Land Board, formed and chaired the first farmers committee,formed and conducted a choral choir (Echoes choir) which raised money for the construction of the clinic building, he concieved and help realize the idea of drift fence which separated grazing lands from ploughing lands.Baipidi was elected chief of Mogapi in 1983 and retired in 2000 only to leave this planet in 2011. In 2000 I volunteered to be a patron of mogapi Primary school and introduced the Gabatshabe Baipidi award to desrving Primary School leaving Examinations excelling students[I am writing a book about him so any sponsorship for the book is welcome for the proceeds will bechannelled to charity in Mogapi]
