About village :

Kebena people are one of the ethnic groups in SNNPRS. Majority of the people live in Kebena woreda which is located in Gurage zone of SNNPRS. The capital of the woreda is Welkite town which is around 150 km from Addis Ababa. As part of the overall capacity building of urban & local societies, the KDA (Kebena Development Association) mobilized the people and make funds available for implementation of Kebena Cultural Centre construction at Welkite, SNNPRS.

History :


Kebena is a distinguished nation having its own identity expressed by language of kushitic family, dressing style, feeding habit, way of life, help culture, cooperation and dispute resolution mechanisms which are in bodies in their traditionally law known as “BobanI Geltita” and enforced by their traditional elder assembly/council called “Oget” the principle of kebena traditional by-law believed to be adopted from Islamic law
Kebena people have its own separate woreda administration with 23 rural kebeles and wolkite town, which is 155 km from the national capital Addis Ababa 450 KMs from regional capital, Hawasa serves as a center of regional administration.
The total land area of kebena woreda is estimated to be 28,300 square KM/hectare before predominately used for agrarian economy kebena woreda share geographic boundaries with Oromiya region from the north Edja & Chaha, Abeshighe, Gutazere-Gudebano-welenn & Muhir Aklil woredas of Guraghe zone from south west and east respectively. The climatic condition is mostly temperate type
A cording to the 1999 population house hold census the total population of kebena people is projected to be 59,473 of which 29,530 male and 29.943 female with annual population growth 2.9% significant number of kebena community is expected to live different parts of Ethiopia like Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Jimma and Saudi Arabia (abroad)

The people of Kebena have a significant part in the history of Ethiopia both in terms of religious and cultural values. They were pioneers in expanding Islamic Doctrine in the Sothern region of the country with strong leadership of Hassen Enjamo (King, Islamic Ruler of Kebena people) during the regime of Minillik II. They do have their own interesting culture that needs immediate attention to keep it in its unique manner. This long history of the people can serve both as source of original research for those in related discipline and contribute to tourism development in nationwide context.

NGO / volunters :

Kebena Development Association/KDA has been established as an independent community based development organization since 2001 E.C. The main objective for the establishment of KDA was to promote the history, culture and language of kebena people so as to keep and transfer cultural values of the community for future generation.
Besides KDA strives to bring socio-economic transformation in kebena woreda by intervening in areas of government shorthanded and take part in attaining government sectorial development goals through community mobilization and, using cultural values to raise resources and implement problem solving projects.
Since its establishment KDA, tries to play significant roles in promoting the nation’s culture. But a remarkable achievement was not yet registered. This is because KDA has not yet developed a well-organized institutional structure/ capacity that enable to executive its duties and, there was no Strategic Plan Management document which shows KDA’s journey /future path. Given these short comings, KDA’s effort to organize cultural symposium, opening of three branch office in different part of Ethiopia, (Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa, Jimma and Saudi Arabia /abroad, initiate to publish Kebena- Amharic- English Dictionary, building office/and Culture center from the resources only mobilized from the community with no potential donors worth credit .
Strong relation and support from kebena woreda administration and sectorial offices as a development partner, contribute a lot for KDA to see its future goal. In addition to administrative support, the community of kebena at large is ambitious to have a well- organized and strong development association that they are ready to contribute what they have for the success of the association.

Tourist Places :

There are century old mosques of “Katbare” and “Zebimola”, which have a great place in Islamic religion followers are found in kebena woreda. Others like underground caves, waterfalls and Hassan Enjamo versus Menelik-II war battle field called “Jebdu Meda” are also potential tourist attractions in the woreda. If these tourist attraction heritages protected and promoted, would be serve as assets for the society of kebena.

Mixed peasant agriculture is the main life stay of kebena woreda with the production of wheat, “teff”, maize, sorghum, oil seed, “enset”,”chat”, coffee and different fruits take the dominant share. Most of the farming is rain-feed despite the presence of potential river water through the year mixed agriculture /crop and animal/ production practiced at subsistence level need intervention to increase productivity, food self-sufficiency and commercialization
