History :

Kampassa Village is founded by the Bainunka tribes with the last name of Sambou, the surrounding villages are also founded by the Bainunkas these villages are Kangsambou, Kangmanadou, Sintet, Jarrol. Many historians believe that the Bainunkas are the original settlers of the area now called Gambia. The original settlements of the Baikunkas were found in Kombo areas. Actually Kombo is a very common Bainunka last name. The Bainunkas occupied the Kombo areas (Brikama, Sanyang, Gunjur, Tanji and other nearby settlements) before the arrival of the Mandingo speaking tribes from Mali. The Bainunkas first welcomed the new settlers with open arms. The Mandingo speaking refugees continue to arrive in masses and started to take the lands that belongs to the Bainunkas. Eventually the Mandingo refugees outnumbered the native Bainunkas. For one reason or another, a war broke out between the Mandingo refugees and the native Bainunka tribes. The Bainunkas first defeated the Mandingo refugees. The Mandingo tribe asked for reinforcement from their distant king (maybe in Mali not sure). The reinforcement and the sheer number of Mandingo refugees finally defeated the Bainunka tribe. The tribe moved out of the Kombo region to settle in the South Bank of The Gambia River. Kampassa Village is founded a Sambou family who excaped the war from the Kombo areas. Actually some Gambia historians even mentioned that when the Europeans first encountered the natives in the Gambia person was a Mandinka speaking individual. The native told the Europeans that this land is Kambiya which means in Mandinka this land belong to Kambi. Kambi or Cambi depending on the spelling is a common Bainunka last name.
