Sankighatta name comes from Settra + Ghatta = Settraghatta and now it is pronounced as Sankighatta. Settra (Settru) + Ghatta (Place) literal meaning is place of Settru.
Settru is historic Jain family name in Sankighatta.
They still live in Sankighatta.

History :

Sankighatta is a Historic Jain center and a birth place of 15th century Kannada Jain poet Chikka Padmanna Shettru. He was born in the Settru family.
Settru family members were the patrons of Jain temple in Sankighatta. Historic records says, prominent member of the Settru family is Kannada Jain poet Darmadikar Padmanna Settru has done Kannada Jain literature work like Ananthanata charita and Vajrakumara charita. Settru family still live in Sankighatta
Sankighatta is a great historic Jain center/place in Karnataka. Dallina Vardaman Mahaveera Thirtankara Jain Basadi/temple is very ancient temple built by Hoisala King Narasima I (1141 AD –1173).
This temple has the unique and beautiful golden colored metal idol of Bhagawan Mahaveera as the main deity. You will not find these kind of Lord Mahaveer metal statue anyware in the world. Devotees from different parts of India visit this place and offer special prayers. This is on the way to shravanabelagola from Bangalore (Bangalore Mangalore road, before Kunigal).
In 15th century a Jain poet by name Darmadikari Chikka Padmanna Settru has done Kannada Jain literature work like Ananthanata charita and Vajrakumara charita. His family descendants still lives in the same village, they are called Settru maneyavaru (Settru Family). Settru Family members are the patrons/Darmadikaris of this temple and had delivered the responsibility to taken care of the temple from the time it was built.
Prominent members are Darmadikari Settru Vardamanaiah, Darmadikari Settru Jawallanaiah, Darmadikari Settru Adirajaiah and Darmadikari Settru Padmarajaiah was the last person to deliver the responsibility of the temple and he handed over the temple keys, roles and responsibility with a written document to Magadi taluk administrator (Tahsildar) around 1950. The family have the same belongingness and respect towards the temple.
Shettru family members still live in Sankighatta and many of the family members are in Bangalore. They still have the same belongingness and respect towards the temple.
Now the temple is under Karnataka muzari and Sankighatta Jain samaja is really doing good work for the temple.
Other temples like Shiva temple, Hanumantha temple.

15th Century Jain temple.
This is a natural habitat for peacock and many other bird species.
Sankighatta has a very big tank/kere which is also a catchment area of rain water which flows from famous Shivaganga hills.
It is very sad to know that the Sankighatta tank is 80% illegally encroached by many greedy people for farming. which has reduced the capacity of the tank. Local government officers or the people representative of the area has to take proper action to save the tank and work towards bring Hemavathi channel water to Sankighatta kere. People of to Sankighatta and surrounding villages has to come forward and pressure the responsible persons to take action.
