About village :

Electoral-wise,Gitombo are two villages situated in Komothai Ward of Githunguri Constituency of Kiambu County.Administaratively, they are situated in Kiratina sub-location,Kiratina location,Komothai division,Githunguri district. The etymology of the term \\\'Gitombo\\\' is disputed. Some say it came from \\\'sprunging of water from a prior inexistent spring\\\' sometimes back, in which in Gikuyu language, the equivalent is \\\'gutomboka\\\' hence \\\'gitombo\\\' denoting the place of the new spring.Another version says that the villagers are brainy and intelligent which is literally taken from the word \\\'tombo\\\' which is English equivalent of \\\'brain matter\\\'It\\\'s important to note that Gitombo comprises of two adjacent villages but Gitombo \\\'A\\\' is geographically lengthwise much more extended where it emerges as a neighbour to Kirigu village. Its namesake Gitombo \\\'B\\\' ends as a geographical sandwich between the larger Gitombo \\\'A\\\' and Kirigu villages.Gitombo \\\'A\\\' neighbours Kiambururu village to the west and Kirigu to the east. The village is named in sections:The lower part is known as Makindu and Karera;then comes Gituamba, then Mung\\\'etho shopping center;then Munanda-ini;and lastly the part that of the land, both Gitombos intersect, to continue and then border the lower reaches of Gathiru-ini.At the Southerly end of Gitombo lies the confluence of Gatamaiyu,Kamaguta and Ruiru rivers.Gatamaiyu forms the boundary between Kiambururu and Gitombo \\\'A\\\',while Kamaguta separates Kirigu from Gitombo \\\'A\\\'.As per the agriculture of the area, coffee is predominant.Thiururi and Ria-Kahara coffee factories serve the village.Nappier grass and generally any edible cattle feeding flora,is highly prized as the villagers are dairy farmers proprieting their milk produce to Githunguri Dairy Farmers Co-opereative Society,at Githunguri town.Milk collecting sheds are as follows from the upper part: Gitombo \\\'B\\\' junction;Nyina wa Nyaguthie entrance;next to Gitombo Primary;Ernest Mukaru\\\'s entrance;Gituamba;and lastly Kwa-Mbari ya Njogu wa Kabaki, roadside shed.If we cite the 2009 Census, the combined villages have an estimated population of 2500 people by October 2013.Similarly,the villages also grow rain-fed maize twice a year, beans, potatoes, peas, bananas, sweetpotatoes, yams, cassava, mangoes, ovacadoes, guavas, passion fruits, sugarcane,Kales, cabbages,Dolichos beans e.t.cMoreover,they rear cows, chicken, goats, sheep, geese, turkey, rabbits e.t.cFurthermore,they experience agricultural problems such as poor or failed harvest due to failed rains.Secondly, they are devastated by pests like moles and porcupines, although the population of these pests is on the decline. There is also a variety of tree species although residents seem to prefer exotic ones compared with indegenous species.Sadly the area has only a single primary school,Gitombo Primary, and no secondary or tertiary institution.Neither does it have any clinic or health center, but Kigumo Health center,Gathiru-ni dispensary and a privately-owned Tumaini clinic offer medical assistance to the residents.Contrastingly, the area has multi-denominational christian faiths, namely: Gitombo Catholic next to Nyina wa Toma\\\'s home; PCEA Gitombo below Gitombo Primary;IPCEA Church below Mbari ya Gachukia\\\'s home;and lastly but not least,Heroes of Faith church at Kwa-Magugu\\\'s farm.Administratively, elders like G.G. Kamweru have become village headmen, while the village has provided only one Ward councillor,Mbuuri wa Gachura. The late Thomas Njoroge Mboche once unsuccessfully vied for the latter post,in the past.Politicaly, the village since independence has participated in Waira Kamau\\\'s triumph in the 1963 General Elections,Magugu in 1969,1974,1979,1983,1988,2002 elections,Njehu Gatabaki in 1994,1997elections,Njoroge Baiya in 2007,2013 elections. The area is quite congested with a population of over about 1000 people per square Kilometer.People hold narrow and long strips of land,in either side of the road, which bisects the villages\\\' ridges in halves, stretching downward across respective steep ridges, all the way to the valley waterways.
