About village :

Engalaweni is about 32km west of Mzimba town.The border to Zambia is almost 2.5km. Its inhabitants are of Ngoni origin. The Paramount chief Mmbelwa settled at Engalaweni before moving further south to Edingeni where the headquarters of the Ngonis was erected. Hence every coronation of a paramount chief takes place in this village. When the paramount Mmbelwa came to this place, he came along with Rev. Andrew Mkochi who started the presbyterian church. At the moment Engalaweni is the centre of Engalaweni Presbytery. Most of the people in the village are literate due to the close proximity of the school. People in this village are very dependent on subsistence farming. Maize is the main crop grown followed by groundnuts and tobacco. The village being close to South Rukuru river, some villagers tend to turn to fishing to get income. The village has seen development in the last 5yrs and becoming a very good trading place. Some people travel from across the border in Zambia to buy and sell commodities here.Transport to and from Mzimba is easily found from here. Gogo Wanikomola owned by James Ndovi Jere, Fife transport owned by Apollo Ngwira, Mama yilenga, and other vehicles do go to town every day.

Temple / Church / Mosque/ Gurdwara :

There are couple of churches in Engalaweni but the prominent being the Presbyterian church, Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). Engalaweni CCAP church is big and situated along the Manyamula-Engalaweni rd.There is a soccer field adjacent to it. This is the headquarters of Engalaweni Presbytery which is comprising of Edingeni Manse, Engalaweni Manse, Manyamula Manse,Solola Manse and Kamteteka Manse.There are plans for the church to build a Secondary School, Hospital and other developments. One can already the facelift Engalaweni is having by the developmental things the church is taking. The other churches are Living Family, Seventh Day Adventists, Church of Christ, Roman Catholic and other African churches.
