History :

Engucwini is a name of a trading centre which is located in Mzimba District of Northern Malawi. The trading centre is at a point of intersection of a gravel road from Mzuzu to Vwaza Marsh via Kamwe and another gravel road from Kafukule heading towards Kacheche and Rumphi. The name Engucwini is actually a Ngoni name of the area. The real Tumbuka name of the place is Mtungumara. The name Engucwini actually came from a village of a Nzima clan which is about 8 km south west of the trading centre. It so happens that the first primary school established in the area around the modern Engucwini was within the village of Chidyake Nzima, in Engucwini Village. This was at a place 2 km east of the present trading centre on the Engucwini-Ekwendeni Road and just after crossing the Katonthoworo Stream as you head towards Ekwendeni. Chidyake Nzima moved his village from that area to an area towards Chankhanga as you go towards Madise. The primary school block remained there but was later moved to a new site next to Mtungumara Hill. The Livingstonia Synod established its prayer house right on top of Mtungumara Hill with the school by the foot hills of Mtungumara. That was around 1910.The school retained the name Engucwini School although the owners of Engucwini Village had moved their village to another site. Hence there was now Engucwini Village and Engucwini School. As the school grew in size, many people came to know the area around the school as Engucwini. The name Mtungumara is only known by elderly people and indigenous Engucwinians, otherwise it is not known by the younger generations. The name Engucwini has its roots from Ngoni/Zulu. The word is derived from - gucuka. Bogucukileyo - literally meaning those that rebelled. So -Bongucwini - has a meaning of a group of people who rebelled.Among the earliest clans that lived in the area of Engucwini were the Nzima, Shonga, Shaba, Munthali Chibaka and Mvula. This was around 1880s.The Munthali, Chibaka people found their way into this area after being captured by the Ngonis and relocated around the area.To be specific the Chigezero Chibaka, an ancestor of most of the Chibakas of Engucwini finally settled in that area of Engucwini in 1898.Early settlers of Engucwini had evenly divided the area around Engucwini among themselves. A quadrant formed between a road to Madise and a road to Ekwendeni belonged to the Mvulas and was called Enyakazweni Village. The headman was Aaron Mvula. A piece of land between the road to Ekwendeni and the road to Rumphi was largely Chibaka`s. And land that lay west of the Madise-Rumphi road largely belonged to Shaba and Munthali, comprising the present day Kabira Village. The first shop for groceries in the area was established in 1954 by Mr Todd Beyani Munthali from Kabira Village. Thereafter Mr Henderson Chibaka opened up his shop in 1959.After that a number of small shops took shape. Mr Zgatika Chirwa, Mr Perekerathu Chibaka, Mr Zomvango Chibaka and Mr Juma Luhanga had their share in trying to put Engucwini on a map of traders. Most of the shops died natural deaths. Today, there are a lot of structures trying to serve the people of Engucwini.
