ARO AMOKWE
Aro Amokwe is a group of three lineages found in Amokwe, a town in the Udi area of Enugu State. It is located on latitude 6o 17' North and longitude 7o 23 ' East. The Aro families in the town are found in four villages named after their host villages as Aro Amofia, Aro Umuajim, Aro Umuochi, and Aro Umuofia Aguma. The founders of the lineages, Amaram-Iro, Uchegbuom and Umenta left Amuvi village in Arochukwu on a trading venture. They traveled along Uzuakoli-Nachi route that led to Owa, Eke, and Ibagwa. Though their relations settled along the trade routes, they decided to settle in Amokwe near Nachi.7 Interaction with their new environment led to a remarkable change in their culture. Although intermarriage was not initially encouraged with non-Aro people, Amokwe culture influenced the Aro especially their dialect. Aro people participate in the feasts and mask plays of Amokwe neighbors. They also visit Arochukwu to participate in traditional ceremonies such as the Ikeji. After their participation in the Ikeji festival of their homeland, they go back to stage their own version of the festival in Amokwe. The Nigeria-Biafra war created a disruption as people fled from the town and returned when the war ended. After the war, some Aro-Amokwe peope bought land in a new location in the town that now constitutes a small settlement by Enugu Onitsha road For details, see Okafor, Culled from: Chinyere G.
