OKELUSE COMMUNITY AT A GLANCE.Okeluse is a small community in OseLocalGovernment Area of Ondo State.It has a population of about 1 millionpeople andit covers an area of about 3,30 km.predominately, the place is dominatedbyfarming activities. It is a general believethat the descendant ofOkeluse community migrated from IseEkiti inEkiti State of Nigeria. When there waswar in EkitiState some people left Ise – Ekiti tosettle in thispresent community called Okeluse. Thecommunity has a first class king (Oba)who happens to be a member of thecouncils of Obasin Ondo State. The community has threeprimary schools, asecondary school, a maternity home,one postoffice, a police post and a market that isbeingrun every five days, where people fromothercommunity like Sobe, Ute and Ogbesedo cometo buy and sell goods. Farming is a majoractivity in this community.Okeluse have three types of farmers,those thatare involved in subsistence farming i.e.farmingmainly for personal consumption,commercialfarmers which are people that farm forcommercial purposes. Their mainproduct is cocoa and the third set ofpeople that engage intimber work i.e. falling of trees from theforest forcommercial purposes. The electrificationof the community some yearsback brought the introduction of newbusinesseslike opening of hotels, restaurant andbeer parlorwhich has not been in the communitybefore. The story of Okeluse will not becomplete withoutmaking reference to the Iro festival. It isa festivalthat is done to mark the anniversary ofthedescendant of the village. Normally agroup ofpeople within the age of 69 years to 71years inthe village are chosen as celebrant ofsuch occasion. They will all be dressed inwhite, bothmen and women and be dancing formone angleto another with a lot of fun fair andmusic. Theentire celebrant will dance to the king’spalacewhere they will be initiated into elderhood.
