History :

It is necessary to make references to the past that we can correctly get the present and then plan for the future. Osi ekiti in Ido osi local government council is about six miles to Ido Ekiti, the headquarter of Ido Osi Local Government (formerly known as Ero Local Government council. The town is situated on a plain within the ekiti hills. The citizens are predominantly farmers due to the gifted mixture of savannah and deciduous vegetation that encourage growing of food crops. As a traditional town in Yoruba land, Osi has a unique history as any of the important towns which originated from Ile-Ife. She derived her name as Legend proved it, from River Osimiri which is the Egyptian name for the Nile god, Osiris. The word Osimiri consists of two parts viz ‘Osi’ and ‘miri’. Osi is an abbreviation of ‘Osiris’ and ‘miri’ means the goddess of the bank of the Nile in Egyptian Language. Osimiri therefore means the efflux of Osiris or Nile overflowing its bank. This name survives in Orisa Osi. The Idol of the god Osiris, a national god of Yoruba. It was worshipped by Oranyan the founder of Yoruba. Oranyan on setting out gave strict injunctions to his people to observe the customary worship of the gods Idi (Edi) and orisa Osi. The Yorubas, therefore regard the worship of Orisa Osi as a traditional obligation. The Yoruabas came along with the Orisa from Egypt. The priest of Orisa Osi was the founder of Osi. Osi had her first settlement in a place called Osi Soko in Ile-Ife before Ogunmegbokanle, the founder of the present Osi Ekiti left Ile-Ife for the new settlement. Another legend has it that the town was named after its founder Olosi who performed the burial and funeral rites of important Obas in Yorubaland. ‘Olosi’ means the head of those who bury. However, since the founder of the town was an idol worshipper, psychologically the ancestors would normally be pagans. Their culture, therefore also had taken root from paganism.
