Petrus Steyn was established on 11th October 1912 on the farm Sterkfontein under the Elandskop and is also the origin of the Renoster River. Petrus Steyn was named after the owner, his wife sold the farm on condition the town be named after her husband.

Petrus Steyn is the second highest town in the Freestate at 1762 metres above sea-level with only Phutaditjhaba higher.

Petrus Steyn is only + - 200 km from Johannesburg and lies in the agricultural hub of the Eastern Freestate producing potatoes for Lays and Simba and other suppliers. Although one of the smallest towns it produces one of the highest volumes of wheat, sunflower and maize per square hectare and boasts the biggest Silo in the Freestate

The highest railway siding in the Free State, (1 712 m above sea level) aptly named Hoogte (“Height”), is situated here. Elandskop, a rocky outcrop west of the town, saw many historical meetings and engagements take place during the Anglo-Boer War and afterwards.General JC de Wet used it as his base and it is here where British soldiers bombed one of the homesteads 10km west of the town, a place now called Middelpunt.
Middelpunt Dam is a popular water sport and angling venue for both local inhabitants and visitors.
