History : Kanukeni also spelt kannukerny is a village that takes it's name after an ancient Kingdom known as kanukeni Kingdom.According to the Tamil Historical books ie Vaiyapadal by Vaiyapuri aiyar and other history books dealing with Vanni history, before the arrival of Vanniyar to The Island of Eelam ( modern srilanka) the kannukeni Kingdom flourished in the eastern part of the Vanni mainland rougly between the modern day Mullaitivu and Trincomalee towns perhaps encompassing about 400 squre kilometers.Before the disintergation of this Chiefdom it was finally ruled by Mappanar ( vellala) Chieftains Who miagrated from South India over 800 years ago circa 12th century CE.Earlier this territory was ruled by vanniyars who also originated from South India.Prior to that circa 6th century CE or earlier this part of Tamil homeland was ruled by indigenous Dravidian veddah Tribes.The famous water tank(a reservoir ie:Kanukenikulam in Tamil) in this Kingdom was built by a veddah King by the name of kannukeni known in Tamil as "Kanu arasan" hence the name of Kannukeni being used to describe his territory.

The only family that can currently claim any Royal title to this Kingdom is Kathiravelu-Vinnasythamby family who are the last descendants of the Mappanar chieftains who ruled this territory.Any one interested in the history of Kannukeni kingdom can read a historical account of Vanni Adangapattu part 3 ( native Chieftains) authored by media person Aruna-selladurai.The kingdom of Kanukeni was susequently re-named as Karikaddumoolai and later divided into Karikaddumoolai north and south.J.P.Lewis manuel of Vanni makes it clear that Karikaddumoolai and Kanukkeni kingdom are one and the same.Karikkaddumoolai means a corner where a rouge Elephant was tied.

The Modern Name for Karikaddumoolai is Maritime pattu of Mullaitivu district.

According to the heriditary succession to the royal title of this Kingdom His excellency The Royal highness Mr.V.P.Lingajothy a lawyer who is currently resident in the United kingdom is going to be the next ruling monarch.Mr.V.P.Lingajothy has recently indicated his willingness to play a ceremonial role in his capacity as the successor to the throne of the Kingdom of kannukeni. His uncle HRH.Kathiraveloe( velon the 3rd) the Current regning monarch is almost approaching eighty years old and lives in south India.Hence the decision to enthrone a younger monarch as Vinnasy the 3rd or give him a a modern day version of that title in that context a new name is yet to be decided by this ruling family.

kannukeni kingdom's current reigning monarch HRH kathiraveloe is only living temporarily in South India becase of the war situation in his country in 2009 and earlier.He will return to his Country when he feels absolutely certain that the life in his country is back to normal and it is safe for him to return.
