About village :

Bukalasi is a village on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, in Bududa district, Uganda. It is located approximately six miles to the east of Bududa town, 30 miles from Mbale town, and 180 miles east of Kampala. A gravel road connects it to the outside world. It is surrounded by the villages of Bundesi, Nametsi, Bukibumbi, Bunamwamba, and on its east, after climbing Mt. Elgon, Kenya. The village has a school, Bukalasi Primary School, and a health center. Its central trading center or Marketplace, Malandu, is famous for the wide assortment of bush animal meats, mushrooms, smoked bamboo shoots, and other wild plants for medicinal purposes collected from Mt. Elgon forest. The people of Bukalasi grow coffee as a cash crop, and bananas(plantains)and maize for food. Its people are strong and powerful, its girls beautiful, the hills steep and scenic, the weather mostly cold (below 60 degrees F). Unfortunately, many of the hills in Bukalasi are prone to landslides, which occur frequently. The most devastating of these was the 2010 landslide near Nametsi, which killed more than 350 people and left thousands homeless. Efforts are still being made to recover from those landslides.
