About village :

In June 2011, my cousin and I traveled to Aleksandrya to see the place where our mothers were borned and raised. They ran away in June of 1942, about 3 weeks before the Germans invaded this region. Their family members who did not go with them, died at the hands of the Ukraines as well as the Germans. We were able to speak with the mayor of the town and we also interviewed an elderly woman who witnessed the march of about 900 Jews to their death in a mass shooting in a ravine behind the town. This is a beautiful place today which seems fairly prosperous although somewhat primitive. Cars in driveways and wagons drawn by horses on the road. The region is one of the most fertile in Eastern Europe. Flowers growing everywhere and heavy forests and rolling hills. We were able to identify some of the places in the few old photographs that we had from our parents. My grandfather was the owner of apple orchards and we were able to find the part of town that was called "The Orchard Neighborhood." There we were shown the new sections of trees and the older trees that may very well have been part of my grandfather's orchard. Our trip to this region was quite remarkable. Our guide and translator was a history teacher from Kiev, who along with us, found this to be a very moving exploration and experience. On our departure from Aleksandrya, she felt comfortable enough to reveal that her father, was a Ukrainain officer who fought and was injured in this very region during the WWII. My family made their way out of Europe after the war and settled in Washington, D.C. because of relatives already living their. My family and I live outside D.C. today. I am visiting Israel now and understand that there is a Kibbutz here that was founded by ancestors of people from Aleksandrya. If anyone knows the name of this Kibbutz, please email the information to me. I would be very grateful.
